Do I need to speak with my academic advisor before registering?
You are encouraged to talk to your advisor about EKU Winter courses if you have any questions at all about how to use winter courses to advance your education.

What is the maximum number of hours I can take in Winter?
Students can register for up to six credit hours for winter session. Please note that no more than six credit hours will be recorded onto a student’s academic history whether earned exclusively earned at Eastern Kentucky University or in combination with courses from another university. No student at EKU can earn more than six credit hours during a given Winter session.

What if the class I want to take is full?
Complete a capacity override request. If a small number of students need admittance to the class past capacity, accommodations can be made based on circumstances. If a large number of students need admittance, the University may open another class. Each of EKU’s six colleges offers its own override request form—they can be found on the college’s website.

What if a class I need isn’t available?
While you can choose from classes in many subject areas this Winter, class selection is more limited in winter than spring and fall. Complete the Winter Session Course Request to let us know what class you need. We will see what’s available and contact you, and it will let us know if there is enough interest to justify offering the class in the Winter. We recommend browsing the course list and working with your advisor to see if rearranging your schedule could help.

When are final exams scheduled?
Course syllabi will provide specific information regarding final exams.

Students may withdraw from Winter session classes through their MyEKU account (previously EKU Direct).

Please refer to Winter Session Deadlines for specific withdrawal deadlines and refund information.

What are the expectations for course activities during the Winter session holiday break?
The instructor of the Winter session course will provide a daily or weekly course schedule outlining expectations, assessments, and assignments for the term.  Generally, class assignments will not be required during the holiday break. Students will not be expected to participate in synchronous or asynchronous online activities.

Students can be assigned readings and projects but the course should allow sufficient latitude such that each student (as well as instructor) may observe holiday activities.

Can my Winter session class be canceled due to low enrollment?
Yes. Each class will be required to meet a minimum enrollment.  The minimum enrollment for undergraduate courses is eight and the minimum enrollment for graduate courses is six students. The University will review course enrollments on the Thursday before the start of winter session. For courses that do not meet the minimum enrollment, instructors may elect to continue with the course on a prorated pay basis.  If the course does not meet minimum enrollment, the instructor will communicate the status of the course to any enrolled students.

FINANCIAL AID & BILLING

How much does it cost to take a Winter session class?
All winter session undergraduate courses will be billed at $410 per credit hour for Kentucky residents and $446 per credit hour for non-Kentucky residents.  Please see https://studentaccounting.eku.edu/tuition-fees-2023-24 for complete graduate rates.

Can I take a winter session class if I have an unpaid bill with the University?
Students who have prior balances with the University may have a registration hold preventing them from registering in Winter session courses.  There are no ‘special arrangements’ for students for Winter session registration.  Students with a registration hold due to a past due balace would need to pay their balance below the $1000 registration hold limit to permit registration.

Payment for Winter session balances would need to be paid out-of-pocket or by financial aid, if the student qualifies.

Students who register for Winter session and have a past due balance of $1000 or more will be disenrolled from Winter prior to the start of classes. Students enrolled in a fall payment plan and are current on that plan are not considered past due.

If the full cost of Winter session is not paid by the deadline of December 28, 2023, students will have a transcript hold placed on their record.  It is also possible a registration hold could be placed on their record, dependent on their total past due amount.

Can I use an EKU staff tuition waiver to pay for a winter session class?
No, the staff scholarship cannot be used to pay for Winter session.  Please refer to the EKU Policy & Regulations page for items related to the Employee Tuition Waiver Program (Policy 8.2.6) for additional information.

Can I use financial aid to pay for a winter session class?
Winter Session is considered to be a part of the nine-month school year; therefore, some financial aid may be available from your fall award. Students must typically save aid money from any fall semester refund for additional coursework.

Since each student's individual financial aid package is different, it is recommended that you contact Big E Central to review your own particular financial aid package in order to determine what may be available to you.

Students must have filed a FAFSA for the academic year of the winter session to be considered for any need-based aid. If you have questions, contact Big E Central at (859) 622-2361.

Are scholarships available for winter term?

Complete the Winter Microscholarship Application to apply.  Application process opens September 20, 2023 and closes at midnight on October 27, 2023. Not all applicants will be awarded.
